How the Neo Welcome Bonus Works: Card, Chequing and the $50 Deposit

Neo's sign-up bonus isn't one lump sum. It's two separate bonuses tied to two different products, and each has its own trigger. Most of the confusion comes from people expecting both to land the moment they sign up.

Looking for the code itself? The current Neo referral code is on our Neo page. This post covers how the bonuses actually work once you have it.

The two bonuses at a glance

Bonus Amount What triggers it
Neo credit card $25 Your credit card application is approved
Neo Chequing account $10 You open the account and deposit $50

Together that's up to $35. You don't need both, but they're separate, so completing one doesn't pay out the other.

The credit card bonus

The $25 is paid when your credit card application is approved. Neo doesn't limit it to one card, so it applies to any Neo credit card, including the Secured Neo Mastercard. If Neo declines the application, there's no card and no bonus.

The standard card involves a credit check, so approval isn't guaranteed. The secured card is the easier route if your credit is thin, since Neo says approval is guaranteed with a deposit. We cover that card in detail in our Secured Neo Mastercard review.

The chequing bonus

The $10 needs two things: a Neo Chequing account and a $50 deposit. Opening the account alone doesn't trigger it. Fund it with the $50 and the bonus follows.

If the $10 hasn't shown up after your deposit, check that the $50 actually landed in the Neo Chequing account (and not just that the transfer was started). If it did, contact Neo support through the app.

Three ways people claim it

Path What you do You get
Card only Apply for a Neo credit card and get approved $25
Chequing only Open Neo Chequing and deposit $50 $10
Both Do each of the above Up to $35

Chequing-only is the quickest if you just want to try Neo. Going for both makes the most sense if you plan to actually use the card, since the chequing account is where your cashback and everyday money can live.

Step by step: getting both bonuses

  1. Start your sign-up through the Neo sign-up link, or enter the code E6B8C9Y7 if sign-up asks for one
  2. Create your account and verify your identity
  3. Open the Neo Chequing account
  4. Deposit $50 into it
  5. Apply for the Neo credit card (or the Secured Neo Mastercard if you'd rather build credit)
  6. Wait for the approval decision

Doing the chequing account first gets the $50 deposit out of the way, and you'll need that account anyway if you go the secured route. Not sure whether you need the link or the code? We break that down in our sign-up link or code guide.

Mistakes that cost people the bonus

  • Skipping the chequing account because you only wanted the card
  • Opening the account but never making the $50 deposit
  • Signing up without the link or code, then trying to add it later
  • Waiting too long. Neo's own referral terms mention a 90-day window, so don't sit on it
  • Applying for a card you're unlikely to qualify for instead of going the secured route

Is $35 worth the effort?

It's a modest bonus, and it's worth being honest about that. $35 won't change your finances. What makes it worthwhile is that you're signing up for products you'd use anyway, so the bonus is a free bonus on top of something you were already going to do.

The real value comes after sign-up. The card earns cashback at Neo's partner merchants (see our Neo cashback partners guide), and if you share finances with someone, the joint account is worth a look.

After you get the bonus

Once the bonuses are in, a few habits make the account worth keeping:

  • Use the card for everyday purchases you'd make anyway, rather than spending more to chase cashback
  • Pay the statement balance in full each month so interest never enters the picture
  • Check the Neo app before bigger purchases to see if the merchant is a cashback partner

Quick FAQ

Do I have to do both? No. The card and chequing bonuses are independent.

Does the secured card count for the $25? Yes. The bonus is tied to a credit card approval, and the Secured Neo Mastercard is a Neo credit card, so it qualifies.

Which should I open first? The chequing account, if you want both bonuses. It also funds the secured card.

Do I need the code and the link? No. Either one works.
